What Happens in Your First Osteopathy Appointment?

Osteopathy consultation

If you've never seen an osteopath before, it's completely natural to wonder what you're walking into. Will it hurt? What will they do? Do I need to get undressed?

Here's exactly what to expect from your first appointment at Evolve Osteopathy — from the moment you book to the point where you leave with a clear plan.

Before You Arrive

Once you've made your booking, you'll be sent a medical form to complete at home in your own time. It's straightforward and covers:

  • Your current complaint and symptoms

  • Your past medical history

  • Any previous surgeries

  • Any medications you're currently taking or have taken

This gives me a thorough picture before you even walk through the door, and acts as a useful safety net if anything gets missed in conversation during the appointment itself.

When You Arrive

We start with a conversation. I'll ask you about how your symptoms began, what the pain feels like, what makes it better or worse, and pick up on anything relevant from your medical form. There's no rush — this part matters, and the more I understand your story the better.

The Assessment

After the case history we move into a full head-to-toe physical examination. This is thorough by design — because pain in one area is often driven by something happening somewhere else entirely.

Postural assessment We start standing. I'll assess your posture and spinal alignment, looking for any asymmetries, pelvic tilt, or signs of scoliosis. Where relevant, I use specific tools to measure things like forward head posture — the position of your head relative to your shoulders — which can be recorded in centimetres and tracked over time to objectively measure your progress.

Spinal curvature assessment I'll also assess the curves of your thoracic and lumbar spine and any pelvic tilt, giving us a clear baseline picture of where you're starting from.

Movement testing We then work through a series of movements — bending forward, rotating, looking over your shoulders, raising your arms — to assess how freely and symmetrically your body moves and where any restrictions lie.

Couch-based examination You'll then move onto the treatment couch for a more detailed assessment of your joints, muscles, and where necessary, your nervous system — including sensation and reflexes. This is all tailored to your specific presentation; not everyone needs every test.

A Note on Clothing

Please wear something comfortable. Depending on what we need to assess, you may be asked to partially undress so that I can properly see your spine and how it moves — this is important for making an accurate assessment. Ladies are welcome to keep a bra or sports bra on. The goal is simply to be able to see your body clearly enough to make genuinely informed clinical decisions.

After the Assessment — Your Report of Findings

At the end of your first appointment you'll leave without treatment — and that's intentional. I take the time to properly analyse everything we've found, and bring you back a few days later for your Report of Findings appointment.

This is a dedicated visit where I'll walk you through:

  • What's been causing your pain

  • A working diagnosis and clinical reasoning

  • Exactly how many sessions I recommend and why

  • The full cost, with no surprises

  • An opportunity to ask any questions before committing to anything

If you decide to go ahead with a treatment plan, we get started straight away at that second appointment.
