FAQ's
How do you treat neck pain?
Treating neck pain can all depend on the cause but usually a combination of techniques such as massage, joint articulation, mobilisation and in some cases where appropriate manipulation.
In most cases there may be other areas of the body that may needing treating such as the shoulders and or mid back that may contribute to the presentation of neck pain.
Advice is always given on ways you can help neck pain at home with posture, exercise and pain management.
What are some causes of neck pain?
There are many causes of neck pain such as a simple muscle strain, stiff joints, pain in the joints themselves, disc problems that all can cause headaches, trapped nerves and localised pain and stiffness.
With taking a history and examining your neck then I will know how to go about treating your neck pain.
Do I need to be referred from my GP?
No you do not need a referral from your GP to book in. However, if you have a complicated medical history, a GP consultation is recommended. If you have any concerns, feel free to give me a call to discuss your case beforehand.
What does treatment involve?
In short, many techniques can be used by an Osteopath. These are often tailor-made for you and your specific set of problems/symptoms.
Osteopaths work with their hands using a highly trained sense of touch; treatment will often consist of soft tissue massage, gentle passive mobilisation techniques and specific joint manipulation.
Exercises will also be given for you to do at home to help in-between visits.
How many treatments will I need?
At the end of the consultation which will include an exam a treatment plan will be recommended to you.
If you are suffering from a long-term problem it may take longer to notice an improvement.
Additionally, more people are recognising the need to look after their own health and they elect to attend for regular maintenance treatments to keep on top of symptoms.
Does Osteopathy treatment hurt?
Every treatment to bespoke to you. Some of the areas of your body that are examined and treated may be tender to touch but I will work at a level that you are comfortable with.
It is normal for you to feel a little achy and stiff after a treatment, this will usually resolve within 24 to 48 hours after treatment. If it does not settle or you are worried please feel free to give me a call.
Is Osteopathy safe?
Osteopathy is a fully regulated profession and the title is protected by law. Osteopath’s are also Allied Health Professionals much like your Pharmacist, Paramedic or Radiographer but has its own regulating body The General Osteopathic Council.
All Osteopath’s are fully insured and are required to complete a set amount of CPD each year in order to keep their knowledge and skills up to date to ensure you get the best possible care.
What should I wear?
It is useful for your osteopath to see the area causing the problem. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing so that a detailed assessment can be made. Some patients prefer to bring sports shorts to wear. Ladies might chose to wear a thin vest top. You can request that your osteopath leaves the room whilst you undress if you are more comfortable with this.
How do I pay?
Payment can be taken by card at time of the appointment or cash can be accepted.
