A sports massage isn’t just for athletes

Massage Therapy is an effective technique for releasing tension and restoring balance to the musculoskeletal system

What is it?

Sports Massage not only relieves tension and anxiety, but it manipulates all soft tissues of the body. Sports Massage separates soft tissues that are stuck together, that are hard, stiff and sore. Muscles (and the fascia that surround them) become stuck after injury, misuse, lack of use, stress and tension. Sports massage can soften muscles and restore movement and mobility around joints that have become stiff and painful.

How Sports Massage Works

Sports Massage produces mechanical pressure to the muscles via different types of techniques and stretches. These effects are expected to increase the flexibility of the joints and decrease stiffness.

Mechanical pressure on the muscles might also help to increase blood flow as well as increasing the temperature of the muscles.

Depending on the technique used, mechanical pressure on the muscles is expected to increase or decrease nerve excitability and decrease the bodies fight or flight response, affect hormones (such as cortisol levels) increasing the relaxation response.

Massage can reduce anxiety levels and improve relaxation after massage.

These benefits of sports massage are expected to help athletes by enhancing performance and reduce injury risk. However, there is limited research into the effects of pre-exercise massage on performance and injury prevention.
